Luke 8:16-18

The Word of God

Jesus said to his disciples, "No one after lighting a lamp hides it under a jar, or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light. For nothing is hidden that will not be disclosed, nor is anything secret that will not become known and come to light. Then pay attention to how you listen; for to those who have, more will be given; and from those who do not have, even what they seem to have will be taken away."

    • The lamp is lit for a purpose; the light it gives shows it at its fullest potential. When loving others we express our love of God. Our acts of kindness, thoughtfulness or thanks are ways in which we can be lamps that are lit.
    • Jesus asks me to pay attention to how I listen, to notice how I notice. If my prayer is full of distraction or if my mind is always racing, I need to do as Jesus asks and pay attention. If I see only deficiency I will lose everything; if I am able to recognise, appreciate and receive blessing, I can trust in God’s goodness and love.

    • Commentators have struggled to interpret this short passage. What do you make of it? In what way do you make it part of your prayer? Are you conscious of your call to be a light for others, an inviting light to lead them to Christ? What is your reaction to being given that task? Ask the Lord to help you to see and accept that role.

    • This is demanding, Lord. I am not comfortable shining before others as an example of Christian living. But I am not much use to you if I hide my allegiance. St Francis of Assisi would tell his friars to walk through the town and preach the Gospel, sometimes by talking, more often by the example of their lives.

    • Each of the sayings here concerns the role of the disciple. There can be no anonymous discipleship. The gospel calls us to live in light and truth, no matter what the cost. ‘Secret discipleship is a contradiction in terms, for either the secrecy kills the discipleship or the discipleship kills the secrecy.’
    • Lord, to be a Christian today is challenging. In times of struggle I am tempted to hide my light, to remain anonymous, to be silent out of shame. Lord, when the wick of my lamp flickers and fades, strengthen its beam and let me be again a light-bearer, a beacon of hope to all whom I daily encounter.
