John 3:16-18

The Word of God

'For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.
'Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Those who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already, because they have not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

    • So much does God love the world, not only all of creation, but me personally, that he entrusted his Son to our world, even though he knew our cruelty and fickleness. Let me bask in the glow of that love.
    • Do I sometimes feel that God is judging me and finding me wanting? Yet he sent his Son to save us, not to condemn us.

    • ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son God gave his son’. We believe that God intervened in human history and gave his only son to show that his attitude to us is that of a loving parent. God loves the world, loves each one of us, loves me.
    • This is the whole message of Jesus, expressed in his words and embodied, directly or indirectly, in the whole of his life. As one theologian has said about his message, 'There just isn't anything else'. Am I convinced of this myself?
    • In love for me, God desires my salvation, my being made whole.

    • They looked down from heaven – the Father, Son and Holy Spirit – with love for their people - for all of us. They could see men and women of all races, colours, ages, faiths, holiness and sin. They knew help was needed for the human race and they waited a long time before the time was right. Prayer inserts us into our true space of belonging – into the community of the Trinity, and in that prayer we are called to bring this divine help to the human race.
