Ин. 1: 1-18

The Word of God

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth. (John testified to him and cried out, ‘This was he of whom I said, “He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he was before me.” ’) From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father’s heart, who has made him known.

    • We come to the end of a year and listen to what God’s word says to us. It helps us look back to learn and look forward in hope. God’s word is a creative word who gives life to all, in love. Jesus is the Word uttered by the Father, the word of hope and promise. Jesus, is God’s message to us - he is our Good News. We know that God loved the world and sent Jesus among us. He is the ‘only Son who is close to the Father’s heart, who has made him known’.
    • It has been an eventful year that leaves lasting memories. We have the fidelity of God to sustain us in the many challenges of life. We need light in the darkness and hope in the uncertainty that is around us. God has given us the Eternal Word and the living word of scripture to guide us. We pray to welcome and appreciate those words more fully, asking that our words may be in harmony with them. What word does the Lord desire me to take with me as I enter the New Year?

    • As all of us today work our way through the Gospel episodes, the realisation at the back of our minds should remain - looking at the face of Christ, we are looking at the face of God.
    • The Word Of God is more than a mere communication or mere message coming from God; it is nothing less than God’s own self-communication (and at more than one level). The Word – or ‘Wisdom – is a personification of God; and of God the Creator (‘the world had its being through him’) and the source of all light and life.
    • Bowled over by the mystery of Easter, the early Christians were led back in their reflection to the full reality of a pre-existent God (‘he existed before me’). In a sense, the whole Christmas feast and season is a celebration of this
    • God’s self-sharing extended even to his Word, Jesus, being ‘made flesh’ – joining humanity - heaven was married to earth, and earth was married to heaven.
    • It had been said that nobody can look on the face of God and live. But now we can ‘see his glory’ – because (as scripture assures us) Jesus is the perfect image of the unseen God.

    • This gospel holds an amazing attraction. Perhaps today, I read the text contemplatively. I allow myself to experience and to savour, the drawing power of the mystery of love beyond all telling. A God who is Life, and Light. The Word who moves house, not content to remain aloof from us.
    • One theologian wrote, I searched for God in the heavens but found he had fallen to earth, so I must seek him among my friends. Lord, Emmanuel I draw near to you today as I celebrate your birth. I thank you for moving house and inserting yourself so fully into our human story of loneliness, pain, frailty and fragility.

    • In this hymn which introduces the fourth Gospel, John proclaims the faith that marks us as Christian. We believe that Jesus is the Word of God, his perfect expression. “No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father's heart, who has made him known”.
    • Lord, in the year that starts tonight, let me grow in the knowledge of God. May I receive of your fullness, grace upon grace. You took on this mortal flesh for me and lived among us. May this coming year bring me closer to you.
