Daily Prayer - 2023-01-29

Presence

Dear Jesus, I come to you today
longing for your presence.
I desire to love you as You love me.
May nothing ever separate me from You.

Freedom

Lord I ask for the grace to know
That doing your will is a joy
Because your will is my deepest desire
And you are always willing what is best for me.

Consciousness

Conscious of your presence Lord
I look over my recent past.
I can be honest with myself about how I’ve been and what I’ve done
Because I know you love truth in the heart and accept me just as I am.

The Word of God

Matthew 5:1-12

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • What the world sees as tragic or empty, Jesus sees as blessed: humility, mourning, gentleness, peacefulness and other virtues. Jesus lived by these qualities himself and we can notice them in his words and actions during his life with us on earth. He could encourage us to live in the spirit of the Beatitudes because he himself lived them and knew that a life of integrity and honesty is indeed a blessed life.
  • Jesus offers his Oscars, his commendations. Think of the affirmation that Jesus gives to what is fragile, weak and overlooked in the eyes of the world. I hear him say, 'Well done' to me for how I have lived in his spirit. I might choose two of these beatitudes to be a backdrop to my prayer and reflection today: one that affirms me and one that calls me further.

Conversation

We don’t always need to talk to communicate.
Can I imagine myself sitting quietly with Jesus?
Can I look silently at him and He at me?
How do I feel?

Conclusion

Thank God for His gift of love
As you go forth with joy and hope
To serve His people.

Amen
