Daily Prayer - 2023-01-28

Presence

I reflect for a moment on God's presence around me and in me.
Creator of the universe, the sun and the moon, the earth,
every molecule, every atom, everything that is:
God is in every beat of my heart. God is with me, now.

Freedom

Lord, too often I think I am the one in control of my life,
Help me to see that I am powerless over so much.
I ask for the grace to be able to hand over my life to you
And experience the joy of that freedom.

Consciousness

In the presence of my loving Creator,
I look honestly at my feelings over the last day,
the highs, the lows and the level ground.
Can I see where the Lord has been present?

The Word of God

Mark 4:35-41

On that day, when evening had come, Jesus said to the disciples, "Let us go across to the other side." And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, "Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?" He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace! Be still!" Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. He said to them, "Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?" And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, "Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?"

Some thoughts on today's scripture

  • Mark’s Gospel challenges the disciples to grow into a more mature faith. Pitched and tossed on the raging sea, they fear shipwreck. In desperation, they wake Jesus up. He had been asleep. But they had been asleep also! They had been asleep as to who he really is.
  • Lord, I resonate with this story. Life’s storms hit unexpectedly and toss me into a sea of chaos, doubt and anxiety. When the waves threaten to swamp my little boat, make me aware that I have you with me as my precious passenger. Let me hear your voice saying: ‘Peace! Be still!

Words don't come easily to me, Lord.
Look into my heart
and see my longing for peace.
Watch over me, Lord.
I know that you are always by my side.

To serve His people.

Following days of rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine, Pope Francis called on Christians around the world to fast and pray for peace in Eastern Europe this coming Ash Wednesday.
