Daily Prayer - 2023-01-26

Presence

"Come to me all you who are burdened
and I will give you rest"
Here I am, Lord.
I come to seek your presence.
I long for your healing power.

Freedom

Lord grant me the grace
to have freedom of the spirit.
Cleanse my heart and soul
so I may live joyously in your love.

Consciousness

In the presence of my loving Creator,
I look honestly at my feelings over the last day,
the highs, the lows and the level ground.
Can I see where the Lord has been present?

The Word of God

Mark 4:21-25

Jesus said to them, "Is a lamp brought in to be put under the bushel basket, or under the bed, and not on the lampstand? For there is nothing hidden, except to be disclosed; nor is anything secret, except to come to light. Let anyone with ears to hear listen!" And he said to them, "Pay attention to what you hear; the measure you give will be the measure you get, and still more will be given you. For to those who have, more will be given; and from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away."

Some thoughts on today's scripture

  • ‘For to those who have, more will be given’ - Jesus is quoting a proverb about economics: the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. His message is to be generous: ‘the measure you give will be the measure you get.’ As Francis of Assisi prayed: ‘It is in giving that we receive.’
  • The lamp to be placed on the lampstand is Jesus. He is the new revelation of God, replacing the lampstands of traditional religion. The prophet is a lamp to the people. In our words and actions, we can keep the lamp of Jesus alight.

Conversation

Friends don’t keep secrets from one another.
As I pray, can I look at Jesus as my friend
And share my innermost thoughts with Him,
Trusting that He understands?

Conclusion

Filled with the loving presence of God,
Ask Him to bless you and guide your steps
As you go to do His work in your daily life.

Prayer for peace:

Following days of rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine, Pope Francis called on Christians around the world to fast and pray for peace in Eastern Europe this coming Ash Wednesday.
