Daily Prayer - 2022-11-24

Presence

Lord, help me to be fully alive to your Holy presence.
Enfold me in your love.
Let my heart become one with yours.

Freedom

"In these days, God taught me
as a schoolteacher teaches a pupil" (Saint Ignatius).
I remind myself that there are things God has to teach me yet,
and ask for the grace to hear them and let them change me.

Consciousness

I exist in a web of relationships - links to nature, people, God.
I trace out these links, giving thanks for the life that flows through them.
Some links are twisted or broken: I may feel regret, anger, disappointment.
I pray for the gift of acceptance and forgiveness.

The Word of God

Luke 21:20-28

'When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near. Then those in Judea must flee to the mountains, and those inside the city must leave it, and those out in the country must not enter it; for these are days of vengeance, as a fulfilment of all that is written. Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing infants in those days! For there will be great distress on the earth and wrath against this people; they will fall by the edge of the sword and be taken away as captives among all nations; and Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. 'There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on the earth distress among nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see "the Son of Man coming in a cloud" with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.'

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • Jesus is speaking with his disciples, bracing them against disasters. If he were preaching now, he would speak of the atomic bomb, nuclear and ecological disasters, and terrorist attacks. ‘Don’t lose heart’ he says to us, ‘God still directs human history and will bring good out of it – your redemption.’ I pray, ‘Jesus, when the evil and suffering of the world tempt me to lose faith, let the words of Saint Thomas Aquinas calm me. He writes that God is so powerful and good that he would allow no evil in any of his works unless he could bring good out of it.’
  • Although we do not know when, Jesus assures us he will return ‘in power and great glory.’ It will not be an occasion for fear but of joy and pride for the righteous, for our redemption from the powers of evil has finally come. I pray for that inner peace that comes from the certainty that God’s saving presence is at work in the world, in my life, as we approach the definitive coming of Jesus.

Conversation

Begin to talk to Jesus about the piece of scripture you have just read.
What part of it strikes a chord in you?
Perhaps the words of a friend - or some story you have heard recently -
will slowly rise to the surface of your consciousness.
If so, does the story throw light on what the scripture passage may be trying to say to you?

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.

Amen

Prayer for peace:

Following days of rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine, Pope Francis called on Christians around the world to fast and pray for peace in Eastern Europe this coming Ash Wednesday.
“I invite everyone to make March 2, Ash Wednesday, a day of fasting for peace, I encourage believers in a special way to devote themselves intensely to prayer and fasting on that day. May the Queen of Peace protect the world from the folly of war.” Pope Francis, 25/02/2022

If you appreciated the daily prayer or have any suggestions or insights we will be glad to hear from you.
