Daily Prayer - 2022-09-22

Presence

To be present is to arrive as one is and open up to the other.
At this instant, as I arrive here, God is present waiting for me.
God always arrives before me, desiring to connect with me
even more than my most intimate friend.
I take a moment and greet my loving God.

Freedom

Lord, may I never take the gift of freedom for granted.
You gave me the great blessing of freedom of spirit.
Fill my spirit with Your peace and Your joy.

Consciousness

Dear Lord help me to be always
aware of the important things in life.
To care for those around me.
To seek your presence in all I meet.

The Word of God

Luke 9:7-9

Now Herod the ruler heard about all that had taken place, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had been raised from the dead, by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the ancient prophets had arisen. Herod said, "John I beheaded; but who is this about whom I hear such things?" And he tried to see him.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • Herod is puzzled because he is being told that Jesus is John the Baptist risen from the dead. At the same time, others say that Elijah, whose expected return would signal the arrival of the Messiah, or some of the former biblical prophets have reappeared. Herod recently beheaded John the Baptist, and the superstitious king is filled with fear and curiosity. He “kept trying to see Jesus”.
  • Let us ask to see Jesus today, to see him with our hearts and not with our minds or intellect. Seeing with our hearts leads to encountering the risen Jesus, which changes our vision of life.

Conversation

Lord, you have engraved my name
on the palm of your hand.
Even if others forget me,
you never will.

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.

Amen

Prayer for peace:

Following days of rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine, Pope Francis called on Christians around the world to fast and pray for peace in Eastern Europe this coming Ash Wednesday.
“I invite everyone to make March 2, Ash Wednesday, a day of fasting for peace, I encourage believers in a special way to devote themselves intensely to prayer and fasting on that day. May the Queen of Peace protect the world from the folly of war.” Pope Francis, 25/02/2022
