Presence

Lord, you are always there
waiting for me. 
May I never be too busy to
find time to spend in your presence.

Freedom

Lord grant me the grace
to have freedom of the spirit.
Cleanse my heart and soul
so I may live joyously in your love.

Consciousness

When I return to my everyday tasks,
remind me, Lord,
that you are always there beside me.
I need never despair.

Luke 9:28-36

Now about eight days after these sayings Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. And while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him. They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. Now Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep; but since they had stayed awake, they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. Just as they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, 'Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah'—not knowing what he said. While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were terrified as they entered the cloud. Then from the cloud came a voice that said, 'This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!' When the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and in those days told no one any of the things they had seen.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

  • Jesus, like some of the key people in his Jewish faith, experiences a profound moment of encounter with God. It is very difficult to imagine what the events on the Mount must have been like for the apostles to experience. What was it about Peter, James and John that they were the only ones to be allowed into this amazing experience? What type of conversations did they have when together given that they were not to share what happened with the others? What effect did the presence of Moses and Elijah have on both Jesus and the chosen apostles? So many questions. While Jesus was Transfigured there can be no doubt that the lives of these three men were also changed. 
  • How does the account of the Transfiguration touch your faith? How do you think it may have influenced Jesus’ own sense of his mission and relationship with God? Imagine yourself after the event having a conversation with the Lord about it.
