Presence

Dear Jesus, today I call on you in a special way.
Mostly I come asking for favours.
Today I'd like just to be in Your presence.
Let my heart respond to Your Love.

Freedom

Lord, you granted me the great gift of freedom.
In these times, O Lord, grant that I may be free
from any form of racism or intolerance.
Remind me, Lord, that we are all equal
in your loving eyes.

Consciousness

Dear Jesus may I always be aware of your presence,
Your power and your Love,
all the days of my life.

The Word of God

Matthew 9:14-17

The disciples of John came to Jesus, saying, "Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?" And Jesus said to them, "The wedding guests cannot mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them, can they? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old cloak, for the patch pulls away from the cloak, and a worse tear is made. Neither is new wine put into old wineskins; otherwise, the skins burst, and the wine is spilled, and the skins are destroyed; but new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved."

Some thoughts on today's scripture

  • New wine in new wineskins. True change is never easy, and we often try to avoid it by changing only the appearances. Yet Jesus is warning us that this can be even more harmful than not changing at all. I look at my life to see where I need to change, and ask for the grace to be brave enough to do so. I pray for the world that is in need of so much change.
  • Jesus invites us to live the present: he, the bridegroom, is with his disciples now, it’s a time for rejoicing. The time will come when he will be taken away, and then they will be sad. We waste so much time and energy feeling sorry for the missed opportunities of the past, or getting anxious about he future. Yet the present is all we possess, so let us be grateful for what we have now and live it as fully as we can.

Dear Jesus, I can open up my heart to you.
I can tell you everything that troubles me.
I know you care about all the concerns in my life.
Teach me to live in the knowledge
that you who care for me today,
will care for me tomorrow and all the days of my life.

Conclusion

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be,
world without end.

Following days of rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine, Pope Francis called on Christians around the world to fast and pray for peace in Eastern Europe this coming Ash Wednesday.
“I invite everyone to make March 2, Ash Wednesday, a day of fasting for peace, I encourage believers in a special way to devote themselves intensely to prayer and fasting on that day. May the Queen of Peace protect the world from the folly of war.” Pope Francis, 25/02/2022
