Daily Prayer - 2022-01-13

Presence

To be present is to arrive as one is and open up to the other.
At this instant, as I arrive here, God is present waiting for me.
God always arrives before me, desiring to connect with me
even more than my most intimate friend.
I take a moment and greet my loving God.

Freedom

Lord grant me the grace
to have freedom of the spirit.
Cleanse my heart and soul
so I may live joyously in your love.

Consciousness

Dear Lord help me to be always
aware of the important things in life.
To care for those around me.
To seek your presence in all I meet.

The Word of God

Mark 1:40-45

A leper came to him begging him, and kneeling he said to him, ‘If you choose, you can make me clean.’ Moved with pity, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, and said to him, ‘I do choose. Be made clean!’ Immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean. After sternly warning him he sent him away at once, saying to him, ‘See that you say nothing to anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.’ But he went out and began to proclaim it freely, and to spread the word, so that Jesus could no longer go into a town openly, but stayed out in the country; and people came to him from every quarter.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • Jesus is filled with a deep sense of compassion for the man's plight. Highlighting the emotional feelings of Jesus is a characteristic of Mark’s gospel. What Jesus feels is compassion not just pity. The leper is told not to say anything about his healing. Jesus wanted no sensationalism.
  • But how could the leper refrain from telling everybody about his wonderful experience of healing? He becomes an ardent spreader of the good news. What is the outcome of our experience of knowing Jesus? Do we have the same enthusiasm to share our good news?

Conversation

Lord, you have engraved my name
on the palm of your hand.
Even if others forget me,
you never will.

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.
