Daily Prayer - 2021-11-29

Presence

It is always nice to be in the presence of friends.
When I come into your presence, O Lord,
I know I am in the presence of my Creator.
You created me out of Love.
You even know the amount of hairs on my head.
Your presence, O Lord, is the greatest of all.

Freedom

There are very few people
who realise what God would make of them
if they abandoned themselves into his hands,
and let themselves be formed by his grace. (Saint Ignatius)
I ask for the grace to trust myself totally to God's love.

Consciousness

Lord, you are present in all things
And when I take time to simply sit and be with you
My mind rests
And I feel your peace.

The Word of God

Matthew 8:5-11

When Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, appealing to him and saying, "Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, in terrible distress." And he said to him, "I will come and cure him." The centurion answered, "Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only speak the word, and my servant will be healed. For I also am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, 'Go,' and he goes, and to another, 'Come,' and he comes, and to my slave, 'Do this,' and the slave does it." When Jesus heard him, he was amazed and said to those who followed him, "Truly I tell you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east and west and will eat with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven."

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • Nowhere in the Gospels do we hear Jesus express such joyful amazement. It is difficult to think of anyone whom he praised so wholeheartedly as he did this pagan centurion, a representative of the hated foreign power. This miracle reminds us of the all-embracing nature of Christ’s mission, and it warns us not to confuse uniformity with universality.
  • Every passage in the Gospel is a revelation of God. Here Jesus reveals the compassion of God. I imagine the scene, and then I ask Jesus to come to me, to cure me and make me fully alive. I relax in the compassion he shows for me. I pray, ‘Lord, the centurion interceded for his sick servant. I now intercede for others who are unwell. More than that, I intercede for our suffering world, which you love so much.’

Conversation

Jesus often asked questions of those who came to him.
Let me sense him close to me now,
Listening to my prayer and asking
‘How can I help you?’
‘What can I give you?’

Conclusion

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be,
world without end.

Amen

Prayer for peace:

Following days of rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine, Pope Francis called on Christians around the world to fast and pray for peace in Eastern Europe this coming Ash Wednesday.
“I invite everyone to make March 2, Ash Wednesday, a day of fasting for peace, I encourage believers in a special way to devote themselves intensely to prayer and fasting on that day. May the Queen of Peace protect the world from the folly of war.” Pope Francis, 25/02/2022
