Daily Prayer - 2021-10-12

Presence

Lord, help me to be fully alive to your holy presence.
Enfold me in your love.
Let my heart become one with yours.

Freedom

I ask for the grace
to let go of my own concerns
and be open to what God is asking of me,
to let myself be guided and formed by my loving Creator.

Consciousness

Grant, O Lord, that I may be conscious
and grateful for all the good things you have given to me.
May I share my blessings with others always.

The Word of God

Luke 11:37-41

While Jesus was speaking, a Pharisee invited him to dine with him; so he went in and took his place at the table. The Pharisee was amazed to see that he did not first wash before dinner. Then the Lord said to him, "Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. You fools! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also? So give for alms those things that are within; and see, everything will be clean for you."

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • This Pharisee is scandalised that Jesus did not perform the ritual of washing before sitting down to the meal in his house. In his mind, this behaviour is mandatory for good Orthodox Jews. So, for him, Jesus’s behaviour is at best, uncouth and at worst, disrespectful of the law of Moses. Jesus is unapologetic. He challenges the Pharisees to pay attention to inner cleanliness, not to plates and dishes.
  • The heart is the place where we meet God. God is not remote and demanding of external pious acts but attentive to the truth of our inner attitudes. It is striking that Jesus says “so give alms” and “everything will be clean for you”. This teaching is also in the Law of Moses but the Pharisees do not even remember it let alone practice it. We can ask for the grace to be able to give alms cheerfully and gracefully today.

Conversation

Remembering that I am still in God's presence,
I imagine Jesus himself standing or sitting beside me,
and say whatever is on my mind, whatever is in my heart,
speaking as one friend to another.

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.

Amen

Prayer for peace:

Following days of rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine, Pope Francis called on Christians around the world to fast and pray for peace in Eastern Europe this coming Ash Wednesday.
“I invite everyone to make March 2, Ash Wednesday, a day of fasting for peace, I encourage believers in a special way to devote themselves intensely to prayer and fasting on that day. May the Queen of Peace protect the world from the folly of war.” Pope Francis, 25/02/2022
