Daily Prayer - 2021-09-13

Presence

My soul longs for your presence, Lord.
When I turn my thoughts to You,
I find peace and contentment.

Freedom

I try to let go of concerns and worries
that may be dragging me down at this present moment.
I place any concerns I have in Gods hands
- at least for these few minutes of prayer.

Consciousness

To be conscious about something is to be aware of it. Dear Lord help me to remember that You gave me life. Thank you for the gift of life. Teach me to slow down, to be still and enjoy the pleasures created for me. To be aware of the beauty that surrounds me. The marvel of mountains, the calmness of lakes, the fragility of a flower petal. I need to remember that all these things come from you.

The Word of God

Luke 7, 1-10

After Jesus had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum. A centurion there had a slave whom he valued highly, and who was ill and close to death. When he heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to him, asking him to come and heal his slave. When they came to Jesus, they appealed to him earnestly, saying, ‘He is worthy of having you do this for him, for he loves our people, and it is he who built our synagogue for us.’ And Jesus went with them, but when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to say to him, ‘Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; therefore I did not presume to come to you. But only speak the word, and let my servant be healed. For I also am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, “Go”, and he goes, and to another, “Come”, and he comes, and to my slave, “Do this”, and the slave does it.’ When Jesus heard this he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd that followed him, he said, ‘I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.’ When those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave in good health.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • At no stage in this whole consoling passage is there evidence of the centurion being in the physical presence of Jesus. He sent others to ask Jesus for healing. And as Jesus neared the house he sent friends to tell him not to trouble coming any further. We echo his astonishing words every time we celebrate the Eucharist - “Lord, I am not worthy to have you under my roof”.
  • Jesus was profoundly impressed by the quality of the life of this man and his genuine concern for his slave. He was not an Israelite yet he put his faith and trust in Jesus whom he called “Lord” on the basis of his experience during his time of duty among the Israelites. As with the centurion we don't need to see Jesus with our eyes to know that he is alive and active in our lives.

Conversation

Lord, you have engraved my name
on the palm of your hand.
Even if others forget me,
you never will.

Conclusion

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be,
world without end.

Amen
