Daily Prayer - 2021-05-01

Presence

"Come to me all you who are burdened
and I will give you rest"
Here I am, Lord.
I come to seek your presence.
I long for your healing power.

Freedom

Lord, may I never take the gift of freedom for granted.
You gave me the great blessing of freedom of spirit.
Fill my spirit with Your peace and Your joy.

Consciousness

I ask how I am within myself today?
Am I particularly tired, stressed, or off-form?
If any of these characteristics apply,
can I try to let go of the concerns that disturb me?

The Word of God

John 14:7-14

If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.’

Philip said to him, ‘Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, “Show us the Father”? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • • Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. This is one of the most important statements of the New Testament: Jesus is telling us the best way to know who the Father is to look at him and the way he behaved. When we see his kindness, his closeness to sinners and to those marginalised by others, when we see to what extent he was ready to share our human condition, we are seeing the Father. This might surprise me sometimes, but it certainly opens my heart. I thank God for making it so easy for us to know him.
  • • Jesus said to him, ‘Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? I might hear these words as addressed to me. I have been with Jesus for so many years, but do I really know him? Like every other relationship, my relationship with Jesus can grow, but this needs commitment and time. I thank Jesus for the quality of our relationship, and I ask him to help me know him even more.

Conversation

May your Holy Spirit guide me
In all my dealings with others.
May I use the gift of speech with kindness.

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.
