Daily Prayer - 2021-01-26

Presence

Dear Lord as I come to you today
Fill my heart and my whole being
with the wonder of your presence.

Freedom

Lord, you created me to live in freedom.
May your Holy Spirit guide me to follow you freely.
Instil in my heart a desire
To know and love you more each day.

Consciousness

I am surrounded by your loving presence, Lord,
But I am aware of my fragility and weakness.
Thank you that I can face my shortcomings
In your merciful embrace.

The Word of God

Mark 3:31-35

Then his mother and his brothers came; and standing outside, they sent to him and called him. A crowd was sitting around him; and they said to him, "Your mother and your brothers and sisters are outside, asking for you." And he replied, "Who are my mother and my brothers?" And looking at those who sat around him, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother."

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • A few days ago I found that the outer circle of Jesus’ family was trying to rein Jesus in. Today I discover that his closest relatives want to meet with him. I wonder how this encounter will go, and as it unfolds I see how Jesus is able to draw unexpected riches from simple events.
  • Here Jesus expands a simple request into a revelation of universal closeness of God to humankind. Anyone who does the will of God is blessed, whether they know Jesus or not. We can’t all be blood relations of Jesus, but we can be bonded with him yet more deeply through divine relationship. So I can rejoice. As a disciple I can say, ‘I belong to his family: I thought I was a nobody, but I have divine connections!’ I thank Jesus for this revelation of who I truly am in God’s eyes.

Conversation

Sometimes I wonder what I might say if I were to meet you in person Lord.
I think I might say "Thank You Lord" for always being there for me.
I know with certainty there were times when you carried me, Lord.
When it was through your strength I got through the dark times in my life.

Conclusion

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be,
world without end.

Amen
