Daily Prayer - 2021-01-25

Presence

Let my heart rejoice and be glad
in this time of prayer.
Remind me often of the great
blessings You have bestowed on me.

Freedom

God is not foreign to my freedom.
Instead the Spirit breathes life into my most intimate desires,
gently nudging me towards all that is good.
I ask for the grace to let myself be enfolded by the Spirit.

Consciousness

Life is busy Lord
Often my best intentions are left undone.
But I know that you are with me in all I say and do,
And in everyone I meet with daily.

The Word of God

Mark 16:15-18

And he said to them, ‘Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation. The one who believes and is baptized will be saved; but the one who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: by using my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes in their hands, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.’

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • This startling conclusion to Mark’s Gospel may have been composed because people demanded a more satisfactory ending than the original one which closes with the confusion of the disciples at the empty tomb. This new ending emphasises the universal scope of Jesus’ mission. It also stresses that belief in Jesus is necessary for salvation: this later led to the unfortunate slogan,’Outside the Church there is no salvation’ which is not to be taken literally. Demons, tongues, snakes and poison are dramatic images of the divine power of Jesus which authenticates the disciples’ mission. Christian hope relies on the fact that Jesus has already won the decisive battle against evil.
  • In my prayer I ask that Jesus’ disturbing freshness may be felt again in the Christian community, and in myself to begin with

Conversation

What is stirring in me as I pray?
Am I consoled, troubled, left cold?
I imagine Jesus himself standing or sitting at my side and share my feelings with him.

Conclusion

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be,
world without end.

Amen
