Daily Prayer - 2021-01-22

Presence

Jesus waits silent and unseen to come into my heart.
I will respond to His call.
He comes with His infinite power and love
May I be filled with joy in His presence.

Freedom

I ask for the grace
to let go of my own concerns
and be open to what God is asking of me,
to let myself be guided and formed by my loving Creator.

Consciousness

Life is busy Lord
Often my best intentions are left undone.
But I know that you are with me in all I say and do,
And in everyone I meet with daily.

The Word of God

Mark 3:13-19

He went up the mountain and called to him those whom he wanted, and they came to him. And he appointed twelve, whom he also named apostles, to be with him, and to be sent out to proclaim the message, and to have authority to cast out demons. So he appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter); James son of Zebedee and John the brother of James (to whom he gave the name Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder); and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. Then he went home.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • Today I find myself with other disciples on the mountain. This location hints at Sinai, the mountain of God, so this is a solemn moment. With my heart in my mouth I hear names being called out: will I be among them, or do I not measure up to Jesus’ criteria? Such relief floods my heart when my name rings out. Perhaps I cry with joy and gratitude that he has a place for me in his inner circle.
  • But the job description disconcerts me and I talk to Jesus about it. I am ‘to be with him’ which is fine, but also ‘to be sent out’ which makes me uneasy. He reassures me, tells me that he has chosen me rather than that I first chose him. If I stay close to him I will myself become a version of the Good News and communicate it well. He adds that his power will always support me in opposing whatever is contrary to the love and compassion of the Gospel. So now I know what discipleship really involves, and I ask not to disappoint the trust he has in me.

Conversation

Remembering that I am still in God's presence,
I imagine Jesus himself standing or sitting beside me,
and say whatever is on my mind, whatever is in my heart,
speaking as one friend to another.

Conclusion

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be,
world without end.

Amen
