Daily Prayer - 2021-01-17

Presence

I pause for a moment and think of the love
and the grace that God showers on me:
I am created in the image and likeness of God;
I am God's dwelling-place.

Freedom

There are very few people
who realise what God would make of them
if they abandoned themselves into his hands,
and let themselves be formed by his grace. (Saint Ignatius)
I ask for the grace to trust myself totally to God's love.

Consciousness

Grant, O Lord, that I may be conscious
and grateful for all the good things you have given to me.
May I share my blessings with others always.

The Word of God

John 1:35-42

The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, "Look, here is the Lamb of God!" The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, "What are you looking for?" They said to him, "Rabbi" (which translated means Teacher), "where are you staying?" He said to them, "Come and see." They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o'clock in the afternoon. One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. He first found his brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah" (which is translated Anointed). He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas" (which is translated Peter).

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Default
  • ‘Come and see!’ This simple invitation is what inspires Sacred Space, and as you read these words now, you are one of many good people who accept Jesus’ personal invitation. Notice how Jesus calls Peter by his name and gives him a new one too. He calls me by my name too, which makes me happy.
  • This is not a once-off invitation but one which hints at enduring companionship and friendship; it is the language of simple love. Later in this Gospel come the words: ‘I will come again and take you to myself, so that where I am you may be also’ (John 14:3). This is the core of Jesus’ message, and the destiny of my life; to be with God. This is the great divine project for humankind, so no matter how crazy the world or my own life may be, I now know what life is about!
  • I chat with Jesus and ask him why he should be so interested in me. Does he say with a twinkle in his eye: ‘Well, after all, you are made in the divine image and likeness, and we have always wanted your eternal company!’

Conversation

Begin to talk to Jesus about the piece of scripture you have just read.
What part of it strikes a chord in you?
Perhaps the words of a friend - or some story you have heard recently -
will slowly rise to the surface of your consciousness.
If so, does the story throw light on what the scripture passage may be trying to say to you?

Conclusion

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be,
world without end.

Amen
