Daily Prayer - 2020-08-04

Presence

Dear Jesus, I come to you today
longing for your presence.
I desire to love you as You love me.
May nothing ever separate me from You.

Freedom

God is not foreign to my freedom.
Instead the Spirit breathes life into my most intimate desires,
gently nudging me towards all that is good.
I ask for the grace to let myself be enfolded by the Spirit.

Consciousness

Knowing that God loves me unconditionally,
I look honestly over the last day, its events and my feelings.
Do I have something to be grateful for? Then I give thanks.
Is there something I am sorry for? Then I ask forgiveness.

The Word of God

Matthew 15:1-2, 10-14

Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, 'Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands before they eat.' Jesus called the crowd to him and said to them, 'Listen and understand: it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles.' Then the disciples approached and said to him, 'Do you know that the Pharisees took offence when they heard what you said?' He answered, 'Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. Let them alone; they are blind guides of the blind. And if one blind person guides another, both will fall into a pit.'

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • Jesus is always calling us to the deeper meaning beneath rules and practices. He challenges us “it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles”. How easily we can speak without thinking and not realise the hurt and pain it can cause to others. Let us take a moment to consider the power our words have, both to restore and to destroy.
  • Jesus is the Word made flesh. What does this mean for my life today?

Conversation

Your own words, Lord, taught me how to pray.
The beautiful “Our Father”,
contains all I would wish to say.

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.

Amen
