Daily Prayer - 2020-05-25

Presence

I bring myself into your presence, O God.
May I always take time to notice and enjoy
the beauty you have created
for my pleasure.

Freedom

Thank you God for my freedom
May I use this gift to do what I can
for those who are oppressed or burdened.

Consciousness

Lord you have called me ‘the light of the world’.
Let me be always conscious of those you want me to serve,
The hungry and the homeless,
The sick and the destitute,
The stranger and the refugee.

The Word of God

John 16:29-33

Jesus' disciples said, 'Yes, now you are speaking plainly, not in any figure of speech! Now we know that you know all things, and do not need to have anyone question you; by this we believe that you came from God.' Jesus answered them, 'Do you now believe? The hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each one to his home, and you will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone because the Father is with me. I have said this to you, so that in me you may have peace. In the world you face persecution. But take courage; I have conquered the world!'

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • “Take courage: I have conquered the world!” I listen to these words of Jesus, who is telling me, as he told so many people during his lifetime, not to be afraid. Perhaps I sometimes feel overwhelmed by the bad news stories I hear every day in the media. Perhaps I feel hopeless, and fearful, because I am unable to control events around me. Today, Jesus is reassuring me that no matter what is happening, he is in control and will always overcome.
  • I talk to Jesus about my fears, whatever they may be, and I ask him to give me faith in his power to overcome all of them.

Conversation

“Stay and watch with me.”
Your words, Lord, to the disciples
before your suffering and death.
I know, Lord, You will stay and watch over me
all the days of my life.

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.
