Daily Prayer - 2020-05-24

Presence

Dear Lord, you have called me by my name.
You have carved me in the palm of your hand.
May I grow in trust and never give in to despair.

Freedom

Lord grant me the grace
to have freedom of the spirit.
Cleanse my heart and soul
so I may live joyously in your love.

Consciousness

To be conscious about something is to be aware of it. Dear Lord help me to remember that You gave me life. Thank you for the gift of life. Teach me to slow down, to be still and enjoy the pleasures created for me. To be aware of the beauty that surrounds me. The marvel of mountains, the calmness of lakes, the fragility of a flower petal. I need to remember that all these things come from you.

The Word of God

Matthew 28:16-20

Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • These are Jesus' last words, his final commission. The eleven poor fishermen, still shaken by the experience of the crucifixion, must have listened with astonishment. /Make disciples of all nations/ -- when we barely know one language and are most of us good only for fishing! But they started where they were, in Jerusalem. If Francis Xavier, that globe-trotting missionary, was alive today, he would no doubt start where we are, on line, and use Sacred Space as we do, to reach people in a score of languages. The Lord is with us as he was with the disciples -- how otherwise can you explain the 1.8 billion on earth today who call themselves Christian?
  • Lord, you are with me whenever I speak of you to others. Give me the courage for that.
  • There where some among the disciples who doubted, yet Jesus seems to have spoken to them all. Jesus sends me, recognising my hesitations and weakness.
  • I take these words of Jesus – ‘I am with you always.’ - and let them settle in my heart. What do they mean for me today?

Conversation

Words don't come easily to me, Lord.
Look into my heart
and see my longing for peace.
Watch over me, Lord.
I know that you are always by my side.

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.
