Daily Prayer - 2020-05-23

Presence

I slow myself down for a moment, and try to realise that God is present.
To me. Here and now. He is in present in what I do,
in the people that I meet, and the situations I find myself in daily.
How can I make this reality real for myself?

Freedom

Lord, like Saint Ignatius, I offer you my memory, understanding,
My entire will.
All I ask for in return is your love and your grace,
That’s enough for me.

Consciousness

How wonderful it is to be able
to enter into your presence Lord.
No matter what time it is.
No matter which land I am in.
I need only to speak your name.

The Word of God

John 16:23-28

Jesus said to his disciples, "Very truly, I tell you, if you ask anything of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete. "I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures, but will tell you plainly of the Father. On that day you will ask in my name. I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. I came from the Father and have come into the world; again, I am leaving the world and am going to the Father."

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • In this passage, I might be inclined to focus on the promise of Jesus that I will be given anything I ask for in his name, and I might feel discouraged. I have often experienced praying hard for something and not getting it. But today, instead, I focus on the central truth that Jesus shares with me, which is this: the Father loves me. I sit quietly and allow this thought to enter into my heart. The Father loves me.
  • Perhaps now my prayer can take a different form. Knowing that the Father loves me, maybe I can bring my concerns to the Father without dictating how they are to be solved? Perhaps I can place them in this loving Father’s care, and leave them there? Father, I let go of my desire for security, for control, and I open my heart to your loving presence and action within me.

Conversation

“Stay and watch with me.”
Your words, Lord, to the disciples
before your suffering and death.
I know, Lord, You will stay and watch over me
all the days of my life.

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.
