Daily Prayer - 2020-05-21

Presence

Dear Lord help me to be open to you
for this time as I put aside the cares of this world.
Fill my thoughts with your peace, your love.

Freedom

Lord, like Saint Ignatius, I offer you my memory, understanding,
My entire will.
All I ask for in return is your love and your grace,
That’s enough for me.

Consciousness

Knowing that God loves me unconditionally,
I can afford to be honest about how I am.
How has the last day been, and how do I feel now?
I share my feelings openly with the Lord.

The Word of God

John 16:16-20

Jesus said to his disciples, "A little while, and you will no longer see me, and again a little while, and you will see me." Then some of his disciples said to one another, "What does he mean by saying to us, 'A little while, and you will no longer see me, and again a little while, and you will see me'; and 'Because I am going to the Father'?" They said, "What does he mean by this' a little while'? We do not know what he is talking about." Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, "Are you discussing among yourselves what I meant when I said, 'A little while, and you will no longer see me, and again a little while, and you will see me'? Very truly, I tell you, you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice; you will have pain, but your pain will turn into joy."

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • Am I like the disciples in today’s passage? Do I get irritated by some of Jesus’ words because I don’t understand them? Do I go over them again and again in my mind, discussing them with myself? Once again, I remind myself to move from my head to my heart, where the Holy Spirit will guide me into the truth of whatever Jesus has to say to me. I let go of my desire to understand intellectually, and I open my heart to the action of the Holy Spirit within me.
  • Is there a word or a phrase in today’s Gospel that stands out for me? If so, I sit with it, not trying to understand it, not “discussing” it, just allowing it to root itself in my heart.

Conversation

May your Holy Spirit guide me
In all my dealings with others.
May I use the gift of speech with kindness.

Conclusion

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be,
world without end.

Amen
