Daily Prayer - 2020-01-12

Presence

God is with me, but more, God is within me.
Let me dwell for a moment on God's life-giving presence
in my body, in my mind, in my heart,
as I am here, right now.

Freedom

Your death on the cross has set me free.
I can live joyously and freely,
without fear of death.
Your mercy knows no bounds.

Consciousness

How do I find myself today?
Where am I with God? With others?
Do I have something to be grateful for? Then I give thanks.
Is there something I am sorry for? Then I ask forgiveness.

The Word of God

Matthew 3:13-17

Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, ‘I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?’ But Jesus answered him, ‘Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfil all righteousness.’ Then he consented. And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.’

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • Jesus, aged about 32, left family and work behind in Nazareth and stood in line with the crowds from so many places coming to John at the River Jordan for baptism and the forgiveness of their sins. Somehow John recognises him as “the one more powerful than I” who was to come and who rightly should be baptising him. But Jesus insists, “It’s proper for us” to carry out the saving plan of God.
  • I hear the voice from heaven identifying Jesus son of Mary as the Beloved of God the Father; the Holy Spirit too alighting on him. The salvation of mankind is under way in the person of Jesus. At my baptism I was called to “Receive the light of Christ” and keep it “burning brightly” in my world of family, work and leisure,

Conversation

Dear Lord, help me each day
to seek your presence more and more.
Fill my heart with love for you.

Conclusion

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be,
world without end.

Amen
