Daily Prayer - 2019-09-11

Presence

Lord, God, my Creator,
Be close to me now.
My soul yearns for your presence.

Freedom

Thank you God for my freedom
May I use this gift to do what I can
for those who are oppressed or burdened.

Consciousness

I remind myself that I am in your presence, O Lord.
I will take refuge in your loving heart.
You are my strength in times of weakness.
You are my comforter in times of sorrow.

The Word of God

Luke 6:20-26

Jesus looked up at his disciples and said:‘Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. ‘Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled.‘Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. ‘Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice on that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets. ‘But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. ‘Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry.‘Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. ‘Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • Each of the Beatitudes describes a human condition from which we would want to move along, yet Jesus proclaims them as states of blessing. I notice what it is in me that causes me to hurry by poverty, hunger or mourning. I ask Jesus to help me to look again that I may see what grace is present despite appearances.
  • I pray for all who experience rejection, denunciation or hostility; I pray that I may see in them what Jesus sees and I consider what Jesus wants me to learn from them.

Conversation

May your Holy Spirit guide me
In all my dealings with others.
May I use the gift of speech with kindness.

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.

Amen
