Daily Prayer - 2019-07-20

Presence

I remind myself that I am in your presence O Lord.
I will take refuge in your loving heart.
You are my strength in times of weakness.
You are my comforter in times of sorrow.

Freedom

God is not foreign to my freedom.
Instead the Spirit breathes life into my most intimate desires,
gently nudging me towards all that is good.
I ask for the grace to let myself be enfolded by the Spirit.

Consciousness

My soul longs for your presence, Lord.
When I turn my thoughts to you,
I find peace and contentment.

The Word of God

Matthew 12:14-21

The Pharisees went out and conspired against Jesus, how to destroy him. When Jesus became aware of this, he departed. Many crowds followed him, and he cured all of them, and he ordered them not to make him known. This was to fulfil what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah: "Here is my servant, whom I have chosen, my beloved, with whom my soul is well pleased. I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles. He will not wrangle or cry aloud, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets. He will not break a bruised reed or quench a smouldering wick until he brings justice to victory. And in his name the Gentiles will hope."

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • Jesus is aware that events are leading up to a life-crisis for him. And so he tries to clarify with his followers, in what sense his mission could be called (as we might say) a ‘revolutionary programme’.
  • His preaching movement has certainly not aimed at armed confrontation (no fighting in the streets) in an effort to oust the Roman occupation of the land. Nor was it an effort to force good moral behaviour through punishment or threat, (breaking the crushed reed, putting out the smouldering wick).
  • Jesus rather – by example and teaching – has tried to bring before the people the reality of their loving Father – that Father, of whom Jesus himself is the beloved favourite, the chosen one.
  • This relationship is the ‘truth’ that Jesus hopes will win out in the hearts of the people. This is to be a revolution-of-love that all nations can put their hope in.

Conversation

Dear Jesus, I can open up my heart to you.
I can tell you everything that troubles me.
I know you care about all the concerns in my life.
Teach me to live in the knowledge
that you who care for me today,
will care for me tomorrow and all the days of my life.

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.
