Daily Prayer - 2019-07-10

Presence

As I begin this prayer, God is here.
Around me, in my sensations, in my thoughts and deep within me.
I pause for a moment, and become aware
of God's life-giving presence.

Freedom

"I am free."
When I look at these words in writing,
they seem to create in me a feeling of awe.
Yes, a wonderful feeling of freedom.
Thank you, God.

Consciousness

When I return to my everyday tasks,
remind me, Lord,
that you are always there beside me.
I need never despair.

The Word of God

Matthew 10:1-7

Then Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness. These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon, also known as Peter, and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed him. These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: "Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, proclaim the good news, 'The kingdom of heaven has come near.'"

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • Jesus singles out from his followers a grouping of twelve individuals to be the agents of the spread of his kingdom – a grouping that would be seen as modelled on the twelve tribes of Israel.
  • We should not understand their mission – commission – to be confined to teaching simply, to just communicating a message. Jesus gave them ‘authority’ – that authority or power which went with his words as he himself performed miracles, and at which people marvelled. We might once more recall that ‘unclean spirits’ were considered to be the root cause of all diseases and sickness, even where direct exorcism might not be called for.
  • At a later stage, not only would Jesus himself venture near areas of borderline belief – but he was to extend to way beyond Israel the commission to impart-with-power the dominion of his kingdom. We can speculate that he envisaged the preaching of his apostles at this particular point, to be simply a preliminary foray.

Conversation

Do I notice myself reacting as I pray with the Word of God?
Do I feel challenged, comforted, angry?
Imagining Jesus sitting or standing by me,
I speak out my feelings, as one trusted friend to another.

Conclusion

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be,
world without end.

Amen
