Daily Prayer - 2019-05-14

Presence

I slow myself down for a moment, and try to realise that God is present.
To me. Here and now. He is in present in what I do,
in the people that I meet, and the situations I find myself in daily.
How can I make this reality real for myself?

Freedom

God is not foreign to my freedom.
Instead the Spirit breathes life into my most intimate desires,
gently nudging me towards all that is good.
I ask for the grace to let myself be enfolded by the Spirit.

Consciousness

My soul longs for your presence, Lord.
When I turn my thoughts to you,
I find peace and contentment.

The Word of God

John 15:9-17

Jesus said to his disciples, "As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. "This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • Today I hear Jesus telling me to love the people who surround me, whether they are my friends or not. What does this mean in practice for me? I think first of all of my family, my friends and the people I work with and I ask for light to consider these relationships honestly. Are there things I need to change in order to truly love these people? Is there anything that is preventing me from loving them?
  • Next, I think about the people who are not part of my immediate circle, and I reflect on what I need to do to love them. I think of the assistant in the supermarket, the driver of my bus, the lonely passenger who tries to strike up a conversation with me, the homeless person who asks me for help. I ask Jesus to help me let go of selfishness and prejudice, and to give me a heart that is free to love.

Conversation

May your Holy Spirit guide me
In all my dealings with others.
May I use the gift of speech with kindness.

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.
