Daily Prayer - 2018-12-18

Presence

"Be still and know that I am God".
Lord, may your spirit guide me to seek
Your Loving presence more and more.
For it is there I find rest and refreshment from this busy world.

Freedom

Lord, like Saint Ignatius, I offer you my memory, understanding,
My entire will.
All I ask for in return is your love and your grace,
That’s enough for me.

Consciousness

Life is busy Lord
Often my best intentions are left undone.
But I know that you are with me in all I say and do,
And in everyone I meet with daily.

The Word of God

Matthew 1:18-24

Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, 'Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.' All this took place to fulfil what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: 'Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel', which means, 'God is with us.' When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife,

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • The “Emmanuel” prophecy was given by Isaiah to King Ahaz 700 years before the birth of Jesus. It was a message of hope in a time of fear, but Ahaz chose to ignore it. Here, Joseph reverses the sin of Ahaz; he hears God’s message and embraces it, allowing the fulfilment of the prophecy to take place. How do I listen for God’s messages in my life?
  • The word of God came to people in many different ways throughout the Old Testament. Joseph’s response stands out. He neither questions nor objects. He goes immediately and does precisely what he has been asked to do - in an act of wholly transformative faith and obedience. How far out of my comfort zone am I prepared to let discipleship lead me?

Conversation

What feelings are rising in me as I pray and reflect on God's Word?
I imagine Jesus himself sitting or standing near me and open my heart to him.

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.
