Daily Prayer - 2018-08-10

Presence

I pause for a moment and think of the love
and the grace that God showers on me:
I am created in the image and likeness of God;
I am God's dwelling-place.

Freedom

A thick and shapeless tree-trunk
would never believe that it could become a statue,
admired as a miracle of sculpture,
and would never submit itself to the chisel of the sculptor,
who sees by his genius what he can make of it. (Saint Ignatius)
I ask for the grace to let myself be shaped by my loving Creator.

Consciousness

Life is busy Lord
Often my best intentions are left undone.
But I know that you are with me in all I say and do,
And in everyone I meet with daily.

The Word of God

John 12:24-26

Jesus said "Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honour."

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • Pope Francis says in Laudato Si’ that “God has written a precious book, ‘whose letters are the multitude of created things present in the universe’”. (Laudato si, 85). Jesus saw nature in this way: do I? Let’s imagine a wheat-grain at harvest time. It feels happy and fulfilled in the autumn sunshine. But winter comes and it is ploughed into the damp earth. It loses its beauty and begins to rot. But with the coming of Spring it starts to stir. Its stalk pushes up to meet the sun and steadily a whole head of wheat emerges, thirty, sixty, perhaps a hundred grains.
  • Can you imagine your life as being like this? God says to you, ‘I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm’ (Jeremiah 29:11). God always works to bring good out of what is less than good in your life. Ask to allow him to work unimpeded in you.

Conversation

How has God's Word moved me?
Has it left me cold?
Has it consoled me or moved me to act in a new way?
I imagine Jesus standing or sitting beside me,
I turn and share my feelings with him.

Conclusion

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be,
world without end.

Amen
