Daily Prayer - 2018-06-17

Presence

Lord, God, my Creator,
Be close to me now.
My soul yearns for your presence.

Freedom

God is not foreign to my freedom.
Instead the Spirit breathes life into my most intimate desires,
gently nudging me towards all that is good.
I ask for the grace to let myself be enfolded by the Spirit.

Consciousness

Lord, grant that I may always desire
to spend time in your presence.
May I not forget your goodness to me.
Guide me to share your blessings with others.

The Word of God

Mark 4:26-34

Jesus said to the crowd, "The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground, and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how. The earth produces of itself, first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head. But when the grain is ripe, at once he goes in with his sickle, because the harvest has come." He also said, "With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade." With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it; he did not speak to them except in parables, but he explained everything in private to his disciples.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • Jesus loves images from farming and nature: how simply they show the dynamic of his faith-movement. Give the image some extra time to sink in. Imagine how an un-scientific middle-eastern farmer of two thousand years ago was in awe of the wonder of “growth”.
  • “The earth produces of itself, first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head.”
  • Something was happening in people and with people when Jesus passed by.
  • Think of the extraordinary diversity of people that wake up to new integrity and wellbeing in Christ every day: the beautiful, the plain, the small, the great, the well, the sick, the rich, the poor, the excluded, the included.

Conversation

Sometimes I wonder what I might say if I were to meet you in person Lord.
I think I might say "Thank You Lord" for always being there for me.
I know with certainty there were times when you carried me, Lord.
When it was through your strength I got through the dark times in my life.

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.

Amen
