Daily Prayer - 2015-03-29

Presence

“Be still and know that I am God”
Lord, may your spirit guide me
to seek Your Loving presence
more and more. For it is there
I find rest and refreshment from
this busy world.

Freedom

There are very few people
who realise what God would make of them
if they abandoned themselves into his hands,
and let themselves be formed by his grace. (Saint Ignatius)
I ask for the grace to trust myself totally to God's love.

Consciousness

At this moment Lord I turn my thoughts to you.
I will leave aside my chores and preoccupations.
I will take rest and refreshment in your presence Lord.

The Word of God

Mark 14:17-25

When it was evening, he came with the twelve. And when they had taken their places and were eating, Jesus said, ‘Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.’ They began to be distressed and to say to him one after another, ‘Surely, not I?’ He said to them, ‘It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread into the bowl with me. For the Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that one by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that one not to have been born.’

While they were eating, he took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to them, and said, ‘Take; this is my body.’ Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, and all of them drank from it. He said to them, ‘This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. Truly I tell you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.’

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • Jesus knew that one of his disciples would betray him, and pointed him out. It was a shuddering time for the rest. Yet still it was part of the mysterious plan of God.
  • He goes on then to institute or create the Eucharist, saying “this is my body”, “this is my blood”. With these omnipotent words the bread and wine are changed into his body and blood. These words show the might and the creative power of God. What is then hidden in the outward show of bread and wine calls for adoration on our part.
  • As he ate the Passover with the disciples, so now we eat and drink with him, the sacramental sign of his presence and his love among us. Faith nourished in prayer leads us to the Eucharist, the sign of unity and of mission in his people.
