Daily Prayer - 2015-01-22

Presence

Dear Lord, help me to be open to you
for this time as I put aside the cares of this world.
Fill my mind with your peace, Your Love.

Freedom

I will ask God's help,
to be free from my own preoccupations,
to be open to God in this time of prayer,
to come to know, love and serve God more.

Consciousness

There is a time and place for everything, as the saying goes.
Lord, grant that I may always desire
to spend time in your presence.
To hear your call.

The Word of God

Mark 3:7-12

Jesus departed with his disciples to the sea, and a great multitude from Galilee followed him; hearing all that he was doing, they came to him in great numbers from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, beyond the Jordan, and the region around Tyre and Sidon. He told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, so that they would not crush him; for he had cured many, so that all who had diseases pressed upon him to touch him. Whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and shouted, "You are the Son of God!" But he sternly ordered them not to make him known.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • St Mark presents here a general picture of the ministry and healings of the Lord. Jesus meets a great multitude of enthusiastic followers on the shore of the sea, people from every part of the Holy Land inhabited by Jews. All Israel gathers to Jesus, the mysterious Son of God, as he establishes the reign of God over his new community. I join them. The deeds of Jesus speak so loudly that ordinary people recognise him as the Son of God. On the other hand, the mounting prejudice of the scribes and Pharisees leads them to reject Jesus.
  • Why does Jesus silence “the unclean spirits”? Mark sees Christ’s ministry as a fight between God and the evil powers. They think they can rob Jesus of his power and defeat him by identifying him as “Son of God.” That may be why he tries to keep the fact of his Messiahship secret.

Conversation

The gift of speech is a wonderful gift.
May I use this gift with kindness.
May I be slow to utter harsh words,
hurtful words, and words spoken in anger.

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.

Amen
