Daily Prayer - 2015-01-22

Presence

"I stand at the door and knock," says the Lord.
What a wonderful privilege
that the Lord of all creation desires to come to me.
I welcome His presence.

Freedom

Lord, too often I think I am the one in control of my life.
Help me to see that I am powerless over so much.
I ask for the grace to be able to hand over my life to you
And experience the joy of that freedom.

Consciousness

Where do I sense hope, encouragement, and growth areas in my life?
By looking back over the last few months, I may be able to see which activities and occasions have produced rich fruit.
If I do notice such areas, I will determine to give those areas both time and space in the future.

The Word of God

Mark 3:7-12

Jesus departed with his disciples to the sea, and a great multitude from Galilee followed him; hearing all that he was doing, they came to him in great numbers from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, beyond the Jordan, and the region around Tyre and Sidon. He told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, so that they would not crush him; for he had cured many, so that all who had diseases pressed upon him to touch him. Whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and shouted, "You are the Son of God!" But he sternly ordered them not to make him known.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • St Mark presents here a summary of the ministry and healings of the Lord: Jesus meets great multitudes of enthusiastic followers on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, people from every part of the Holy Land inhabited by Jews. All Israel gathers to Jesus, the mysterious Son of God, as he establishes the reign of God over his new community. People feel at home with him. To me too he says, “Abide in me as I abide in you” (John 15:4).
  • Why does Jesus silence ‘the unclean spirits’? St Mark understands his ministry as a fight between God and the evil powers, spirits that can possess the bodies and minds of men. They think they can rob Jesus of his power and defeat him by identifying him as “Son of God”. That may be why he tries to keep the fact of his Messiahship secret.

Conversation

May your Holy Spirit guide me
In all my dealings with others.
May I use the gift of speech with kindness.

Conclusion

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be,
world without end.

Amen
