Presence

Dear Lord as I come to you today
Fill my heart and my whole being
with the wonder of Your presence

Freedom

A thick and shapeless tree-trunk
would never believe that it could become a statue,
admired as a miracle of sculpture,
and would never submit itself to the chisel of the sculptor,
who sees by his genius what he can make of it. (Saint Ignatius)
I ask for the grace to let myself be shaped by my loving Creator.

 

Consciousness

Where do I sense hope, encouragement, and growth areas in my life? By looking back over the last few months, I may be able to see which activities and occasions have produced rich fruit.  If I do notice such areas, I will determine to give those areas both time and space in the future.

The Word of God

Luke 2:36-40

There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshipped there with fasting and prayer night and day. At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favour of God was upon him.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

  • In this passage we meet Anna who is described as a prophetess. She was a widow and quite old. At that time widows held very little social status. Anna was a deeply spiritual person who spent her waking hours in the Temple, praying and fasting. This short passage says a few important things:
  • Our social status is of no consequence where our relationship with God is concerned. However, if we want to be close to God, prayer has to be a very important part of our day. Jesus can come into our life at any time and in any place – it may be a church or it may be a nightclub. Once we really come to know Jesus, we are called to share the experience with others, especially those who are looking for some meaning in their lives.

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.
