Daily Prayer - 2014-11-05

Presence

What is present to me is what has a hold on my becoming.
I reflect on the Presence of God always there in love,
amidst the many things that have a hold on me.
I pause and pray that I may let God
affect my becoming in this precise moment.

Freedom

Your death on the cross has set me free.
I can live joyously and freely,
without fear of death.
Your mercy knows no bounds.

Consciousness

Lord, you are present in all things
And when I take time to simply sit and be with you
My mind rests
And I feel your peace.

The Word of God

Luke 14:25-33

Now large crowds were travelling with him; and he turned and said to them, 'Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and estimate the cost, to see whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it will begin to ridicule him, saying, "This fellow began to build and was not able to finish." Or what king, going out to wage war against another king, will not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one who comes against him with twenty thousand? If he cannot, then, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for the terms of peace. So therefore, none of you can become my disciple if you do not give up all your possessions.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • Today’s passage is a message to those who wish to follow Jesus, explaining what will be expected of them if they wish to gain eternal life. It is difficult to read what seems to be a call to hate those closest to us.
  • However, Jesus tells us we must choose what is most important to us. Therefore, we need to give less priority to other aspects of our lives, whether that is relationships or possessions.
  • We are invited to examine all aspects of our life carefully and decide if the reward of eternal life in God’s presence is more important than anything else. We can ask Jesus to help us identify what we need in our lives to follow him truly.

Conversation

To communicate we don’t always need to talk.
Can I imagine myself sitting quietly with Jesus?
I looking silently at him and He at me.
How do I feel?

Conclusion

Thank God for His gift of love
As you go forth with joy and hope
To serve His people.

Amen
