Daily Prayer - 2014-10-24

Presence

Dear Lord help me to be open to you
for this time as I put aside the cares of this world.
Fill my thoughts with your peace, your love.

Freedom

I try to let go of concerns and worries
that may be dragging me down at this present moment.
I place any concerns I have in Gods hands
- at least for these few minutes of prayer.

Consciousness

I remind myself that I am in your presence, O Lord.
I will take refuge in your loving heart.
You are my strength in times of weakness.
You are my comforter in times of sorrow.

The Word of God

Luke 12:54-59

Jesus also said to the crowds, "When you see a cloud rising in the west, you immediately say, 'It is going to rain'; and so it happens. And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, 'There will be scorching heat'; and it happens. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time? "And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? Thus, when you go with your accuser before a magistrate, on the way make an effort to settle the case, or you may be dragged before the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer throw you in prison. I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the very last penny."

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • Jesus spent much time walking from one place to another. He knows how to read the weather signs like others who live and work outdoors. He is inviting us however, to look more deeply into the patterns of events. It is not enough to be good at reading weather signs. We need to be able to read “the signs of the times”. Jesus, seems to be demanding a further effort on our part to take responsibility for judging what is right. We need to “inform” our conscience in order to make good choices.
  • The ecological damage to earth and sky calls for a real engagement on our part to change our lifestyles. If a refugee trapped in a camp somewhere were to become our accuser, they might indict us for refusing them a place at the inn. Let us welcome them now rather than find ourselves excluded from the feast later.

Conversation

“Stay and watch with me.”
Your words, Lord, to the disciples
before your suffering and death.
I know, Lord, You will stay and watch over me
all the days of my life.

Conclusion

Filled with the loving presence of God,
Ask Him to bless you and guide your steps
As you go to do His work in your daily life.

Amen
