Daily Prayer - 2014-10-24

Presence

As I begin this prayer, God is present,
breathing life into me and into everything around me.
For a few moments, I remain silent,
and become aware of God's loving presence.

Freedom

Thank you God for my freedom
May I use this gift to do what I can
for those who are oppressed or burdened.

Consciousness

Lord, grant that I may always desire
to spend time in your presence.
May I not forget your goodness to me.
Guide me to share your blessings with others.

The Word of God

Luke 12:54-59

Jesus also said to the crowds, "When you see a cloud rising in the west, you immediately say, 'It is going to rain'; and so it happens. And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, 'There will be scorching heat'; and it happens. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time? "And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? Thus, when you go with your accuser before a magistrate, on the way make an effort to settle the case, or you may be dragged before the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer throw you in prison. I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the very last penny."

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • We have seen from the previous readings that Jesus is now aware of what is happening, and that that the journey to Golgotha, and the disaster of the cross, has begun. There is no turning back for him, until this baptism of fire has been completed.
  • And here Jesus shows his anger and frustration with those people who cannot see what is happening, who do not realise the crisis they are in. If they knew, they would make preparations to avoid disaster.
  • Once again, take a little time to be with Jesus during this moment of dismay. Imagine the loneliness Jesus feels, as the only one who can see the danger ahead. It is never easy to accompany Jesus on the road to the cross, but we wish to do so because we love him.

Conversation

What is stirring in me as I pray?
Am I consoled, troubled, left cold?
I imagine Jesus himself standing or sitting at my side and share my feelings with him.

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.

Amen
