Daily Prayer - 2014-10-13

Presence

“Be still and know that I am God”
Lord, may your spirit guide me
to seek Your Loving presence
more and more. For it is there
I find rest and refreshment from
this busy world.

Freedom

Lord I ask for the grace to know
That doing your will is a joy
Because your will is my deepest desire
And you are always willing what is best for me.

Consciousness

Lord, you are present in all things
And when I take time to simply sit and be with you
My mind rests
And I feel your peace.

The Word of God

Luke 11:29-32

When the crowds were increasing, Jesus began to say, "This generation is an evil generation; it asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. For just as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so the Son of Man will be to this generation. The queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the people of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon, and see, something greater than Solomon is here! The people of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the proclamation of Jonah, and see, something greater than Jonah is here!"

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • When we see dark clouds forming on the horizon, we know a storm is coming. Jesus seems to realise that the opposition to His teaching is taking an ominous turn. He speaks about the final judgment. The Son of Man is destined to become a sign like Jonah, who was buried inside the whale for three days before being regurgitated onto the beach to complete his mission. Jesus will be buried in the tomb of death. Jesus is calling this generation to repent just as Jonah did for the Ninevites.
  • Conversion means a change of heart to receive the words of salvation that Jesus preaches. The Queen of the South travelled a huge distance to listen to the wisdom of Solomon, yet the people of Israel refuse the message from Jesus who stands right beside them. These words challenge us to ponder our own continuing conversion. Are we really allowing the words of Jesus to guide our life and wills? In what area of my life do I still need conversion?

Conversation

I begin to talk to Jesus about the piece of scripture I have just read.
What part of it strikes a chord in me? Perhaps the words of a friend - or some story I have heard recently - will slowly rise to the surface in my consciousness. If so, does the story throw light on what the scripture passage may be trying to say to me?

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.

Amen

Prayer for peace:

Following days of rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine, Pope Francis called on Christians around the world to fast and pray for peace in Eastern Europe this coming Ash Wednesday.
“I invite everyone to make March 2, Ash Wednesday, a day of fasting for peace, I encourage believers in a special way to devote themselves intensely to prayer and fasting on that day. May the Queen of Peace protect the world from the folly of war.” Pope Francis, 25/02/2022

If you appreciated the daily prayer or have any suggestions or insights we will be glad to hear from you.
