Daily Prayer - 2014-09-27

Presence

God is with me, but more,
God is within me, giving me existence.
Let me dwell for a moment on God's life-giving presence
in my body, my mind, my heart
and in the whole of my life.

Freedom

Lord, grant me the grace to be free from the excesses of this life.
Let me not get caught up with the desire for wealth.
Keep my heart and mind free to love and serve you.

Consciousness

I remind myself that I am in the presence of the Lord.
I will take refuge in His loving heart.
He is my strength in times of weakness.
He is my comforter in times of sorrow.

The Word of God

Luke 9:43-45

And all were astounded at the greatness of God. While everyone was amazed at all that he was doing, Jesus said to his disciples, "Let these words sink into your ears: The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into human hands." But they did not understand this saying; its meaning was concealed from them, so that they could not perceive it. And they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • We cannot but admire the skill of Luke in painting the starkest of contrasts between the amazement of 'everyone' at all that He was doing, and their lack of understanding of his future suffering. Jesus is the Saviour who shows us the greatness of God through his suffering for us.
  • Like the disciples, we are frightened by suffering and its apparent meaninglessness. I bring some suffering I know to my prayer, and try to ask Jesus what it means.

Conversation

Dear Lord, stay by my side always.
Gain for me a trusting heart.
Thank you for loving me.

Conclusion

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be,
world without end.

Amen
