Presence

Lord, help me to be fully alive to your Holy presence.
Enfold me in your love.
Let my heart become one with yours.

Freedom

It is so easy to get caught up
with the trappings of wealth in this life.
Grant, O Lord, that I may be free
from greed and selfishness.
Remind me that the best things in life are free.
Love, laughter, caring and sharing.

Consciousness

Help me Lord to be more conscious of your presence.
Teach me to recognise your presence in others.
Fill my heart with gratitude for the times Your love has been shown to me through the care of others.

The Word of God

Luke 6:27-38

‘But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. Do to others as you would have them do to you.

‘If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. If you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

‘Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get back.’

Some thoughts on today's scripture

  • The words of Jesus today are particularly challenging and difficult for us. Although we may be very familiar with these phrases, trying to live them, may feel impossible for most of us, most of the time. Jesus in referring to the law of the Old Testament uses the phrase “but I say to you.” Here we are being called to a new way of living, behaving, responding to our daily, human encounters.
  • Living this new way of Jesus as outlined in this passage is only possible with Gods help. As mentioned in Matthew 19:26, we are told that for people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible. Let us pray for Gods grace to truly love and be merciful in our lives today.

I speak out my feelings, as one trusted friend to another.

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.
