Daily Prayer - 2014-09-09

Presence

I bring myself into your presence, O God.
May I always take time to notice and enjoy
the beauty you have created
for my pleasure.

Freedom

I ask for the grace
to let go of my own concerns
and be open to what God is asking of me,
to let myself be guided and formed by my loving Creator.

Consciousness

When I return to my everyday tasks,
remind me, Lord,
that you are always there beside me.
I need never despair.

The Word of God

Luke 6:12-19

Now during those days Jesus went out to the mountain to pray; and he spent the night in prayer to God. And when day came, he called his disciples and chose twelve of them, whom he also named apostles: Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew, and James, and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James son of Alphaeus, and Simon, who was called the Zealot, and Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

He came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea, Jerusalem, and the coast of Tyre and Sidon. They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. And all in the crowd were trying to touch him, for power came out from him and healed all of them.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

  • Jesus was about to make the important decision about the choice of the twelve apostles, something that would have repercussions for all humanity to the end of time and indeed into eternity. In preparation for this choice Jesus spent the whole night in prayer to God. We should opt for similar preparation when confronted with important decisions.
  • “When day came,” we are told about the wide variety of activities and events that focused on Jesus - anticipating the future history of the Church; the calling of apostles and disciples; the ongoing listening to the word of God and the healing of every kind of ailment. At the heart of it all was the Lord himself. The power that came out of Jesus on that occasion is as available to us today as it was all those years ago.

Conversation

Dear Lord help me to be always
aware of the important things in life.
To care for those around me.
To seek your presence in all I meet.

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.

Amen
