Daily Prayer - 2014-09-02

Presence

I remind myself that, as I sit here now,
God is gazing on me with love and holding me in being.
I pause for a moment and think of this.

Freedom

Fill me with Your Holy Spirit Lord,
so that I may have inner freedom.
Let your Spirit instil in my heart
a desire to know and love you more each day.

Consciousness

In the presence of my loving Creator,
I look honestly at my feelings over the last day,
the highs, the lows and the level ground.
Can I see where the Lord has been present?

The Word of God

Luke 4:31-37

Jesus went down to Capernaum, a city in Galilee, and was teaching them on the sabbath. They were astounded at his teaching, because he spoke with authority. In the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, "Let us alone! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God." But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be silent, and come out of him!" When the demon had thrown him down before them, he came out of him without having done him any harm. They were all amazed and kept saying to one another, "What kind of utterance is this? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and out they come!" And a report about him began to reach every place in the region.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Default
  • The people of Capernaum were astounded at the authority of Jesus and his words. He was not saying things that were very different from what they normally heard, but he was speaking with great authority. He had a clear sense of who he was, his relationship with the Father was the bedrock of his life and message, and so he could speak with great authority. He had no other interest than that of proclaiming the truth and preaching the Kingdom.
  • It is very impressive that when expelling demons Jesus encountered resistance. He raised people from the dead and fed thousands with a few loaves and fishes without any effort, but he was challenged and resisted by the demons, even though he still had the last word. No wonder I am sometimes mystified by the power of evil around me. I ask Jesus to give me the same trust in his power that I see in the possessed man and the onlookers in the synagogue.
