Daily Prayer - 2014-08-28

Presence

I reflect for a moment on God's presence around me and in me.
Creator of the universe, the sun and the moon, the earth,
every molecule, every atom, everything that is:
God is in every beat of my heart. God is with me, now.

Freedom

Dear Lord, instil in my heart
the desire to know and love you more.
May I respond to your will for my life.

Consciousness

As I talk to you, O God,
help me to grow in appreciation of the gifts of communication.
Grant that I will speak out for those who have no voice
and always have a kind word for those in need.

The Word of God

Matthew 24:42-51

Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.
'Who then is the faithful and wise slave, whom his master has put in charge of his household, to give the other slaves their allowance of food at the proper time? Blessed is that slave whom his master will find at work when he arrives. Truly I tell you, he will put that one in charge of all his possessions. But if that wicked slave says to himself, "My master is delayed", and he begins to beat his fellow-slaves, and eats and drinks with drunkards, the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour that he does not know. He will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • Therefore, you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour. Jesus does not tell us to be afraid or anxious, but to be ready and prepared to welcome him whenever he comes to our lives. I look back to the moments when Jesus’ coming was a surprise, to the moments when I was ready to meet him and when I was too distracted. I ask for the grace to know how to replace anxiety with trust, looking forward to meeting Jesus, whenever he arrives.
  • Our times are very sensitive to all kinds of abuse of power, yet we seem unable to eliminate it. I pray for the abused and the abusers, for politicians and judges of integrity who will enact and enforce laws that prevent abuse and bring redress. I look at my life and ask for light to see whether I am like the man in the parable.

Conversation

Lord, I know that when I turn to you there is no need for words.
You can see into my heart.
You know my desires and you know my needs.
I place myself into your hands.

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.
