Daily Prayer - 2014-08-21

Presence

May my heart rejoice in your love, O Lord.
Let me live each day anew.

Freedom

I try to let go of concerns and worries
that may be dragging me down at this present moment.
I place any concerns I have in Gods hands
- at least for these few minutes of prayer.

Consciousness

As I spend this time with you, Lord,
I am aware of how blessed I truly am.
I think of the love and laughter in my life,
And I feel grateful.

The Word of God

Matthew 22:1-14

Once more Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying: ‘The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding banquet for his son. He sent his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding banquet, but they would not come. Again he sent other slaves, saying, “Tell those who have been invited: Look, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready; come to the wedding banquet.” But they made light of it and went away, one to his farm, another to his business, while the rest seized his slaves, maltreated them, and killed them. The king was enraged. He sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city. Then he said to his slaves, “The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy. Go therefore into the main streets, and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet.” Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both good and bad; so the wedding hall was filled with guests.

‘But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing a wedding robe, and he said to him, “Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding robe?” And he was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, “Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” For many are called, but few are chosen.’

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • Today’s gospel passage is once more about God’s generous call, this time to a sumptuous feast. Once again, however, he expects us to accept his invitation. Being invited places on us a real responsibility. Yet it is so easy to take God’s generosity for granted, and we find excuses not to respond, “they made light of it and went away!” What is God inviting me to at this point in my life? Am I as good at finding excuses not to answer his call? Am I the procrastinator, postponing my response to a more suitable moment? Once more I pray not to be deaf to his call, but ready to respond generously, to the best of my ability.
  • God’s generosity is not blocked by our carelessness or lack of response: he sends his servants to invite those who would not have qualified in the first place. This is another reference to the universality of God’s offer of salvation. It is all God’s gift. I thank God for his goodness to me and my people, and pray for a Church that is always open, seeking others willing to listen to God’s generous offer.

Conversation

Dear Lord, stay by my side always.
Gain for me a trusting heart.
Thank you for loving me.

Conclusion

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be,
world without end.

Amen

Prayer for peace:

Following days of rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine, Pope Francis called on Christians around the world to fast and pray for peace in Eastern Europe this coming Ash Wednesday.
“I invite everyone to make March 2, Ash Wednesday, a day of fasting for peace, I encourage believers in a special way to devote themselves intensely to prayer and fasting on that day. May the Queen of Peace protect the world from the folly of war.” Pope Francis, 25/02/2022
