Presence

Dear Lord as I come to you today
Fill my heart and my whole being
with the wonder of your presence.

Freedom

"I am free."
When I look at these words in writing,
they seem to create in me a feeling of awe.
Yes, a wonderful feeling of freedom.
Thank you, God.

Consciousness

Jesus, You are always there waiting for me.
Grant that I may be still more often.
That I may always desire to spend time in your presence.
To know Your peace, Your love.

The Word of God

Matthew 5:1-12

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

  • What a challenging teaching this is from Jesus. St Ignatius in his teaching invites us to contemplate such scenes in our prayer. As I sit on the grass and look around the crowd I see people who, by their clothing, the expression in their faces, show that life is not easy. Jesus uses the word ‘blessed’. How do I feel about what it is being said? Does it ring true for me?
  • I look at Jesus. He knows about poverty, manual work, discrimination. At the same time, he transmits a total sense of peace. Blessedness is in the fact that God is near. God can use those who in the eyes of the world seem to have little value.
  • I think of my own life and challenges today. What would be my own beatitude? I ask Jesus to help me to remember what it means to be truly blessed.

May I use the gift of speech with kindness.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning,
