Daily Prayer - 2014-02-26

Presence

Jesus waits silent and unseen to come into my heart.
I will respond to His call.
He comes with His infinite power and love
May I be filled with joy in His presence.

Freedom

Lord, too often I think I am the one in control of my life,
Help me to see that I am powerless over so much.
I ask for the grace to be able to hand over my life to you
And experience the joy of that freedom.

Consciousness

Jesus, You are always there waiting for me.
Grant that I may be still more often.
That I may always desire to spend time in your presence.
To know Your peace, Your love.

The Word of God

Mark 9:38-40

John said to him, "Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us." But Jesus said, "Do not stop him; for no one who does a deed of power in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. Whoever is not against us is for us."

Some thoughts on today's scripture

  • Membership of a particular group is not the test. This is a principle we need to take seriously to heart. There can be a strong temptation among us to a kind of exclusivity. Many Christian groups can fall into this trap. As St Paul tells us in one of his letters, the word of God is not bound. God can do his work through all kinds of people – people of all religions and of none.
  • The test is whether what others do fits in with our goals of truth, love, justice, compassion, freedom, peace, non-violence etc. Our God is to be found in all these things. The Church is a way to a further goal; it is not itself the end.

Conversation

I begin to talk to Jesus about the piece of scripture I have just read.
What part of it strikes a chord in me? Perhaps the words of a friend - or some story I have heard recently - will slowly rise to the surface in my consciousness. If so, does the story throw light on what the scripture passage may be trying to say to me?

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.
