Daily Prayer - 2014-02-19

Presence

I bring myself into your presence, O God.
May I always take time to notice and enjoy
the beauty you have created
for my pleasure.

Freedom

What most often stops me achieving freedom is my tendency
to be caught up in fears and expectations
about what I 'ought' or 'should' be.
My usual automatic responses tie me down
and inhibit me from exploring new areas of growth.
I ask and pray for a greater sense of inner freedom and
that I might reach the fresh and challenging possibilities
that God wishes me to realise.

Consciousness

We are all pilgrims on a journey to you, Lord.
May we contemplate your time on earth,
and, with Your help, follow in your footsteps.

The Word of God

Mark 8:22-26

They came to Bethsaida. Some people brought a blind man to him and begged him to touch him. He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village; and when he had put saliva on his eyes and laid his hands on him, he asked him, ‘Can you see anything?’ And the man looked up and said, ‘I can see people, but they look like trees, walking.’ Then Jesus laid his hands on his eyes again; and he looked intently and his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. Then he sent him away to his home, saying, ‘Do not even go into the village.’

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • In today’s gospel, we hear that the community came together begging for help for someone in need. Jesus, however, led the man out of the village, away from the crowd to heal him. In this personal encounter, between Jesus and the blind man and away from the eyes of the crowd, Jesus healed the man but the healing did not happen instantly. It took time for the man’s sight to be restored and to see clearly again.
  • Do we see our times of prayer - our personal encounter with God - as opportunities for healing in our lives? Like the blind man, we also need to be patient, to trust that Jesus will restore and heal us gradually. Who in my community needs the healing of Jesus? Can I take a step in bringing that person to Jesus? I pray that all people in need will receive the powerful healing touch of Jesus.

Conversation

Friends don’t keep secrets from one another.
As I pray, can I look at Jesus as my friend
And share my innermost thoughts with him
Trusting that He understands?

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.

Amen

Prayer for peace:

Following days of rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine, Pope Francis called on Christians around the world to fast and pray for peace in Eastern Europe this coming Ash Wednesday.
“I invite everyone to make March 2, Ash Wednesday, a day of fasting for peace, I encourage believers in a special way to devote themselves intensely to prayer and fasting on that day. May the Queen of Peace protect the world from the folly of war.” Pope Francis, 25/02/2022
