Daily Prayer - 2014-02-14

Presence

When I come into your presence, O Lord,
I know I am in the presence of my Creator.
You created me out of Love.
You even know the number of hairs on my head.
Your presence, O Lord, is the greatest of all.

Freedom

Fill me with Your Holy Spirit Lord,
so that I may have inner freedom.
Let your Spirit instil in my heart
a desire to know and love you more each day.

Consciousness

Sometimes I get overwhelmed by the cares of this world.
At times like these may I be aware
of the comfort of your Presence,
Your infinite love for me.

The Word of God

Luke 10:1-9

After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself intended to go. He said to them, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest. Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves. Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, first say, “Peace to this house!” And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your peace will rest on that person; but if not, it will return to you. Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide, for the labourer deserves to be paid. Do not move about from house to house. Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you; cure the sick who are there, and say to them, “The kingdom of God has come near to you.”

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • The same reading, earlier this month, was used on the feast day of Saint Francis (4th October). Here it is chosen for the feast of Saint Luke, as the author of the third gospel. Two saints, living twelve centuries apart, and yet both inspired by the same message: God's joy for the poor.
  • 'Greet no-one on the road'. The single-minded urgency of the gospel requires a suspension of social norms, even of basic traveller's courtesy. What does my own spiritual 'journey' look like? Does it have something of the same intensity and focus that makes people take notice of something unusual? Do I come across as a man, or a woman, on a mission?
  • 'The Kingdom of God has come near to you'. Take some time to imagine yourself hearing these words, spoken to you. By whom? Now take some time to imagine yourself speaking these words. To whom do you speak them?

Conversation

What is stirring in me as I pray?
Am I consoled, troubled, left cold?
I imagine Jesus himself standing or sitting at my side and share my feelings with him.

Conclusion

I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.
