Daily Prayer - 2014-01-01

Presence

The more we call on God
the more we can feel God's presence.
Day by day we are drawn closer
to the loving heart of God.

Freedom

What most often stops me achieving freedom is my tendency
to be caught up in fears and expectations
about what I 'ought' or 'should' be.
My usual automatic responses tie me down
and inhibit me from exploring new areas of growth.
I ask and pray for a greater sense of inner freedom and
that I might reach the fresh and challenging possibilities
that God wishes me to realise.

Consciousness

Knowing that God loves me unconditionally,
I can afford to be honest about how I am.
How has the last day been, and how do I feel now?
I share my feelings openly with the Lord.

The Word of God

Luke 2:16-19

So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • The shepherds might seem to be the least likely people to be the first with the news yet here they are – bringing good news that would change the world! I may think of myself as an unlikely herald of the gospel message. I remind myself that it is not about my worthiness, but I am asked to speak the truth as I know it.
  • Although there is much to talk about, Mary ponders in her heart. I consider what this means for me, how I might reflect and turn over in my heart things that cause wonder. I ask the Holy Spirit to enlighten me, to lead me to wisdom and light.

Conversation

The gift of speech is a wonderful gift.
May I use this gift with kindness.
May I be slow to utter harsh words,
hurtful words, and words spoken in anger.

Conclusion

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be,
world without end.

Amen
