Daily Prayer - 2013-10-28

Presence

"I stand at the door and knock," says the Lord.
What a wonderful privilege
that the Lord of all creation desires to come to me.
I welcome His presence.

Freedom

Thank you God for my freedom
May I use this gift to do what I can
for those who are oppressed or burdened.

Consciousness

Help me Lord to be more conscious of your presence.
Teach me to recognise your presence in others.
Fill my heart with gratitude for the times Your love has been shown to me through the care of others.

The Word of God

Luke 6:12-16

Now during those days he went out to the mountain to pray; and he spent the night in prayer to God. And when day came, he called his disciples and chose twelve of them, whom he also named apostles: Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew, and James, and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James son of Alphaeus, and Simon, who was called the Zealot, and Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

Some thoughts on today's scripture

Active
Default
  • Today, we remember two apostles, Simon and Jude, of whom little is known. Jesus chose twelve, just as there were twelve tribes of Israel. They were an unlikely group from ordinary backgrounds, but the Lord could work through them. Lord, you call us by name into relationship with you and with each other. Help us to hear your ongoing call that we may respond with greater generosity allowing you to work through us for the glory of the Father.
  • Luke points out that the Lord spent the night in prayer before calling the twelve apostles. The key aspects of Jesus life and mission unfolded in times of prayer. As the unknown disciples of this time we are chosen and appointed to be his companions for mission, and we ask the Lord to help us hear the call anew. May we, too, be people of prayer, who draw closer to you and who are free to be sent in your name as apostles of this time.

Conversation

Sometimes I wonder what I might say if I were to meet you in person Lord.
I think I might say "Thank You Lord" for always being there for me.
I know with certainty there were times when you carried me, Lord.
When it was through your strength I got through the dark times in my life.

Conclusion

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be,
world without end.

Amen
